The new equipment is part of the US$200m investment in Berth 6 by ICTSI to expand MICT and increase terminal capacity from the existing 1.9m to 2.5m teu. MICT is only dedicated container handling facility in the country and it currently handles 65% containers in the Port of Manila.
The new quay cranes, which take MICT’s fleet to 12 units, have a 65-ton full twin-lift capacity capable of lifting containers 18 across and the twin-lift spreaders are manufactured by Stinis of the Netherlands. A third quay crane is on order and delivery is scheduled for early next year (2013).
Then on Thursday (June 28), Philippine President Aquino inaugurated the new berth that had taken two years to build. “We are doubly proud and honoured that President Aquino has taken the time to be with us on this special occasion,” said Enrique K. Razon Jr., ICTSI chairman and president.
