Finnish manufacturer Kalmar is set to deliver a total of 21 forklifts, five empty container handlers, and four reachstackers for the New Port Project (NPP) in Qatar.

The order, which also includes training to serve port operations and equipment handling, was booked into the 2016 third quarter intake with deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2017.

The forklifts ordered include Kalmar DCG100-12, DCG120-12, DCG150-12, DCF250-12LB, DCF300-12LB, DCE280RoRo, DCE330RoRo and DCF450-12 units.

The empty container handlers purchased are five Kalmar DCF100-45E7 units, with the order also including four Kalmar DRG450-60S5 reachstackers.

The QAR27bn (US$7.4bn) NPP, which covers a 26.8 sq km area and is located south of Doha, includes Hamad Port, a new base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3.

The new multi-purpose port, which started partial operations at the end of 2015, is now fully operational following the opening in December last year of Container Terminal 1, with a throughput capacity of 2m teu annually.

Nabil Al-Khaldi, director of engineering at Qatar Ports Management Company MWANI, said: “This delivery represents the culmination of the successful collaboration between the New Port Project and Kalmar.

“The new Kalmar fleet will play an important role in helping us to reach our cargo-handling goals at Hamad Port, and Kalmar’s expert training will help ensure the best use of their reliable equipment.”
