Terminal operations at a new 350,000 teu Hutchison Ports facility located in the north of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have commenced following a commemorative ceremony.
Hutchison Ports signed a concession agreement at Saqr Port, located in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), to operate the terminal for 25 years.
RAK is home to the one of the world’s largest ceramics manufacturer, RAK Ceramics, as well pharmaceutical, glass, cement and crushed rock shippers.
Hutchison Ports Group managing director, Eric Ip, said: “These companies can now take advantage of a less congested and more sustainable multimodal shipping route to Jebel Ali and beyond.
“Meanwhile, by frequenting Hutchison Ports RAK, local truckers will have a shorter delivery route that allows them to make more trips every day.”
The four-berth facility will trade under the name of Hutchison RAK and features an 800 m long quay, a depth alongside of 12 m and a 20 ha yard.
The port is located 25 km from the RAK city centre and is in close proximity to the RAK Maritime City Free Zone and the Al Hamra and Al Ghail industrial zones.
