Florida International Terminal receives first avocado shipments from Colombia

The first 18 tonnes of Hass avocados have arrived at Florida International Terminal (FIT) from Colombia, on board the Dubai Express of Hapag Lloyd.

The fruit came from the Colombian port of Cartagena to the SAAM-operated terminal in the US before continuing towards a distribution center in Georgia, from where it will subsequently arrive at its final destination.

Klaus Stadthagen, FIT’s general manager, said: “The US represents around 40% of this product’s purchasers worldwide, and estimates indicate that it imported around US$2bn in 2016.

“We hope to facilitate the entry of Colombian avocados to the US, by providing a service especially designed for these shipments.”

FIT is one of eleven terminals where SAAM has a participation in America. Its concession lasts until the year 2015 (with an extension option of 5+5 years) and in 2016 mobilised more than 202,000 teu.

SAAM is a multinational company present in 13 countries through its three business divisions: port terminals, towage and logistics, generating over 11,000 jobs.

It is one of the major port operators in the Americas, with terminals in the US, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Chile.
