Update (June 18): According to Hutchison Ports, performance across all areas of the container division; vessel, road and rail, has improved significantly over the last 72 hours. The average turnaround time for trucks at its container terminals is down to 48 minutes while quayside productivity is double that achieved in early part of last week and rail operation has stabilised.
The Port of Felixstowe is currently experiencing operational delays following the implementation of a new in-house terminal operating system (TOS) over the weekend, replacing Navis.
The problems with the go-live have resulted in “severe delays and cancellations across all areas of port operations, including rail, road and shipside container moves”, noted a customer advisory from Maersk Line.
Lorry drivers have complained on social media about tailbacks reaching 16 hours according to the BBC.
In a statement, the port, which is operated by Hutchison Ports, noted that the delays were occurring as it “beds in [its] new TOS nGen”.
CM understands that Felixstowe was using a TOS supplied by Navis before the implementation.
The statement from Felixstowe said: “We are currently experiencing system communication inconsistencies within the container yard which are having a knock on effect on yard performance.
“All our container yards remain open, processing over 3,800 trucks [on June 12].”
The new system is operating across Felixstowe’s container and rail terminals after a migration of data on June 10.
“The implementation of any major system is a complex process,” added the port in a customer notice.
nGen is already in use at 25 Hutchison Ports around the world.
The statement from the UK’s largest container port added: “We have a highly trained and experienced team, including specialists from Hutchison Ports Hong Kong, who have installed nGen at many ports around the world overseeing the implementation.”
