Dr. Matthews has a strong background in the water sector, starting out initially as a laboratory technician in the pharmaceutical industry before embarking on a long and successful career in the water and sewage treatment industry, including over 25 years at Anglican Water.
His current role on the Board of the Environment Agency expires in 2006, where he has been since 2000. He is actively engaged in the work of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM); the European Water Association and the Society for the Environment.
On the Board of the PLA he will be responsible for ensuring that commercial, passenger and recreational activities on the Thames River are carried out in an environmentally sound way.
