Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director of the Port confirmed that rail lifts had passed the one million mark, and that they had virtually doubled the number within three years.
Part of the drive to transfer cargo by rail instead of by road was motivated by environmental concerns, as rail cuts down on air pollution.
There are four on-dock facilities serving six of the seven container terminals at the Port of Los Angeles. Ten to twelve trains leave the port every day, amounting to a reduction of 2,500 trucks off the roads.
