Perata drew comparisons between stringent airline security measures, and the relatively relaxed procedures at ports, where his comment about the possibility of blowing up the Port of Oakland drew sharp criticisms from the California Office of Homeland Security.
Whereas the Homeland Security office has in recent years secured US$132m for port security, Perata has dedicated US$750m for security concerns, mainly at ports.
