Dr Ricuarte VÃ squez, chairman of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP)’s board of directors and Minister for Canal Affairs, submitted the proposal to the National Assembly on 26 June. The Assembly will review the proposal and hold discussions that will be open to all Panamanian citizens. If the proposal is approved, the Assembly will mandate a referendum on the expansion, to be held after 90 days.
“This marks an important milestone for Panama and its Canal, as we take another step toward shaping the future of our country and waterway,” said Alberto Alemán Zubieta, administrator and CEO of the ACP.
The expansion would be the largest project at the Canal since its original construction. It would double the waterway’s capacity and allow more traffic by creating a new lane through the construction of a new set of locks.
