Railion’s support has ensured the continuation of the Baltic ferry line, which otherwise would have been discontinued. Sassnitz-Mukran is the biggest rail/ferry port in Germany, and the only port in Europe that can handle shipments using Russian broad-gauge freight cars. The ferry used will be the Vilnius, which can carry 90 Russian freight cars or 108 truck trailers, and up to 120 passengers. There will be three departures a week in both directions.
There are also plans to extend services before the end of the year to the new Russian port of Baltijsk near Kaliningrad, as soon as construction there is completed. The companies are negotiating with Russian rail company RZD to conclude the necessary arrangements.
