The Black Sea port’s development strategy centres on the construction of a new container terminal on Pier II S, organised in three phases. Phase one, which is already complete, gives Constantza a handling capacity of 325,000 teu. Phase two will take its capacity to 450,000 teu and is scheduled to be operational after 2009. Phase three, which will have a capacity of between 800,000 teu and 1m teu, is earmarked for 2014-15.
The new terminal began operations in April 2004, and handles about 80 per cent of Constantza’s container traffic. However, rapid growth saw the capacity of the first stage of development exceeded by the end of 2005, and volumes are forecast to continue growing over the coming years. Expansions in the terminal’s storage area will be accompanied by additional investment in quay cranes, RTGs, terminal tractors, chassis and other equipment.
