“We have contributed significantly to the GPA’s growth in the past and are pleased now to cement our relationship well into the future. We are confident in the GPA’s ability to accommodate our requirements through ongoing investments in the port’s infrastructure,” said Wim Lagaay, vice president, operations for Maersk.
“Because Georgia has made the necessary investments to more than double its container capacity in less than ten years, Maersk Lines has taken steps to make the Port of Savannah one of its primary ports of call in the South Atlantic,” said Doug J. Marchand, executive director of the GPA. “We appreciate the confidence that Maersk is showing in the GPA’s ability to handle its container volume now and in the future. Our facilities are second to none and are well-positioned to handle this growth.”
Phase One of Savannah’s newest container berth, CB8, has recently opened. The port’s ten-year, US$700m improvement plan to boost container capacity also includes increases to container storage areas and investment in new equipment.
