The second crane is expected to arrive by September, bringing the total number of quay cranes at the terminal to ten. VTE also has an additional two cranes on option, which can be ordered to meet potential increases in throughput.
VTE’s new cranes have been designed and manufactured in Italy, and are the largest type of ‘low height profile’ quay cranes. They are capable of handling vessels with up to 18 rows across and are also capable of twin-lift operations. The cranes are part of port operator PSA International’s commitment to invest in and grow VTE, which serves as the major gateway to central and southern Europe. The terminal handled a total of nearly 900,000 teu in 2005.
