The total container traffic handled at the four leading Black Sea ports in the first half of 2006 amounted to 900,000 teu, an increase of 38% over the same period of 2005. Constantza accounted for 464,788 teu of this, some 300,000 teu ahead of its main competitor, the Port of Odessa.
In fact, Constantza’s total traffic was three times bigger than that of the other three ports put together. However, its rivals recorded impressive growth figures for the period: Odessa’s traffic grew by 40.4% to reach 175,313 teu and Ilyichevsk’s by 28.5% to 148,544, while traffic at Novorossisk increased by 33.1%.
