PTP’s chief executive officer, Harun Hj Johari, said the increase in container throughput was partly due to the integration of Maersk and P&O Nedlloyd, which had brought about new services at PTP, and continued growth by Evergreen Marine Corp. This has also resulted in an increase in PTP’s global connectivity to 70 weekly services throughout the world – which, said Harun, will further enhance the port’s position as a transhipment hub.
According to Harun, development for phase two of PTP’s terminal expansion remains on schedule. Berth 9 is currently being commissioned, while Berth 10 will be ready by the end of August 2006. The completion of these two berths will increase PTP’s annual handling capacity to 8m teu.
PTP recently purchased eight super post-Panamax quay cranes, three of which are currently being commissioned and which will be operational by the end of the year. The remaining five are to be delivered in stages next year. PTP’s crane productivity stands at an average of 33 moves per hour, which is the highest in the region and well above the industry average.
