The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) will implement a revised schedule of security fees from October 1. Specifically, the VPA security surcharge will be increased from US$2 to US$4 per container. However, the fee on breakbulk cargo will remain at 10 cents per short ton.

Virginia increases security fees

The VPA says that the increase is based solely on “security-related costs associated with mandates of the 2002 Marine Transportation Security Act (MTSA)”. According to the Authority, security costs since 9/11 have more than doubled, forcing it to divert money away from port infrastructure to pay for strengthening its facilities against the threat of terrorism.
