The Port of London Authority (PLA) has appointed David Snelson as its next chief harbour master and a member of the PLA board. He will take up his new post from January 2007.

Snelson appointed PLA chief harbour master

Mr Snelson joins the PLA from the Royal Navy, where he is currently serving as a rear admiral. He has had a distinguished career in the Royal Navy and in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) since 1969.

He has commanded a number of ships, most recently the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, and has been Commander UK Maritime Forces, the Navy’s senior seagoing operational commander. He has also been Director Naval Staff and Director Naval Operations at the MoD.

In his spare time, Mr Snelson is a Fellow and Council member of the Nautical Institute and a member of the Royal Yachting Association. He takes over from Bruce Richardson, who retires as PLA chief harbour master at the end of December.
