The new agreement significantly increases the amount of heavy-wheeled or tracked cargo and the numbers of specialist trailers handled by Cargoflow. To cope with this, the company has taken delivery of two of the most powerful 4×4 terminal tractors available, as well as a 10-tonne forklift truck, four three-tonne specially adapted forklift trucks, six cargo trailer hooks and a heavy-duty 4×4 vehicle for specialist cargo towage. Cargoflow now handles about 85 per cent of all the high and heavy cargo passing through Southampton.
Mark Bookham, operations director at Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics UK, commented: “Apart from the 160,000 cars that we ship every year, we carry an enormous variety of cargoes including yachts, power-generation equipment and agricultural and construction machinery on our 28 sailings a month to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA.”
