This was announced on October 12, 2006 by Harm Winkeler of Stinnes‚ at a meeting of the EVO’s southern branch. Mr Winkeler, the company’s marketing and sales manager for the Netherlands, presented his vision of the opportunities for rail transport in the southern part of the country. According to his vision, the combination of cargo flows and the provision of suitable storage and distribution facilities are crucial aspects in the further development of wagonload transport.
The Stinnes RailPorts in northern Italy serve as an excellent example in this respect. The company’s facilities in Turin, Desio and Castelguelfo mean that it has three well-equipped and centrally located rail distribution centres. Typical characteristics of these RailPorts are their ample connections to the main rail network, the space to handle complete trains up to 600 metres long, and excellent storage and distribution facilities. In addition to enabling covered transhipment from truck to train and vice versa, the RailPorts also offer warehousing facilities.
Each day, complete trains from Germany arrive at the northern Italy RailPorts, then depart again in the opposite direction. The other exceptional feature of this concept is that the entire transport process is directly managed by Railion itself. This provides a greater guarantee of appropriate levels of transport quality and reliability.
