Discussions focused on the creation of a single language for EDI messages that can be used globally by all organisations. This would mean that terminals, shipping lines, transport companies and customs authorities could all use their own IT systems but communicate with one another via a single EDI standard.
Other topics on the agenda included electronic seals, container tags, schedule messages and XML technology. More details of the issues concerned can be found on the SMDG website at www.smdg.org. The organisation’s next meeting will be held in Piraeus, Greece in April 2007, while its 50th meeting (marking 20 years of existence) will take place in Salerno, Italy in October 2007.
