The landmark unit for 2006 was a container from American President Lines’ New Confidence, a 1,078 teu capacity vessel that docked at Berth 3 on arrival from Kaohsiung. New Confidence is part of APL’s weekly MNX Manila Express service, which operates on the Kaohsiung-Manila-Cebu-Manila-Kaohsiung route.
“The one millionth teu milestone is an indication of MICT’s recent positive growth volume. We have witnessed optimistic figures for the third quarter of the year, and we are confident of container handling intensifying in the last quarter of the year,” said Francis M Andrews, ICTSI senior vice president for operations and MICT’s general manager.
Overall, at MICT and its other terminals in the Philippines and overseas, ICTSI handled a total of 530,302 teu for the third quarter of the year, a 15% increase from the same period in 2005. Its total for the first nine months of 2006 was up 6% to 1,448,074 teu.
