The new systems enable greater operational efficiency and productivity by allowing the operation to be monitored in real time and by using automation to reduce mishandles. They include an ITS radio data network that provides yard operators with an instant, automated and uninterrupted link to management systems.
This in turn is linked to the main ITS PDS (Position Determination System), using satellite technology for GPS tracking and container move identification, and allowing the efficient targeting of work instructions and automated confirmation of grounding positions. A key feature connected directly to the PDS is the Automated Truck Identification (ATI) module, which allows automatic identification of the containers carried and the grounding locations required.
ITS has also installed its equipment/operator security system on the cranes. Machine-readable ID cards authorise operators to use equipment and access data, preventing RTGs from operating without the correct driver for that shift and providing a data link from the RTG to the terminal’s ERP system to automatically generate work orders for maintenance.
