Containerised cargo made a major contribution to the upsurge, with the port incorporating new full container shipping services in the course of the year. Containers accounted for 6m tonnes of total traffic, a huge hike of 57% compared with 2005. The increase was similar in terms of teu, with Valparaiso hitting a total of 593,000 teu for the year.
“The key to this growth is our integrative strategy, with strong synergy between the private and public world. The Empresa Portuaria Valparaiso (EPV), the concessionaires Terminal Pacifico Sur and Valparaiso Terminal de Pasajeros, operators, public services, customs… and port maritime workers have [collaborated] in offering high-value services,” said German Correa Diaz, chairman of EPV.
