APM Terminals Virginia, which is expected to be operational by 2008, is the largest private terminal in US history. It will initially provide 977 m of deepwater berth space and will have an annual container handling capacity of 1m teu. As well as shuttle carriers, the 230-acre automated facility will operate with 100-tonne lift capacity ship-to-shore cranes, cassettes and translifters, and automated stacking cranes.
The Shuttle Carrier caters specifically to the needs of large container facilities by providing fast and flexible transportation between the ship-to-shore crane and the terminal stacking area. The self-loading one-over-one unit improves crane productivity by eliminating unnecessary waiting time on the quayside, according to Kalmar.
