Mersin Port, previously owned by the TCCD, was put out to tender by the Turkish Privatisation Authority in August 2005. MIP was successful in winning the 36-year concession, with a bid of US$755m.
The port is one of the most important in Turkey, with a transaction volume of around 17m tonnes and 5,000 vessel calls in 2006. Located on Turkey’s eastern Mediterranean coast, it serves as a transit port for trade with the Middle East. It provides an important sea connection for the South-eastern Anatolia Project, and also has good road and rail connections. In particular, it serves as an export gateway for regional industry and agriculture.
MIP will provide container, ro-ro, general cargo, warehousing and maritime services for the whole of Mersin Port. The port currently has four container wharves, five quay cranes and two mobile port cranes, and a designed capacity of 880,000 teu. It occupies an area of 110 hectares, and has a wharf length of 870 m and a draught of 14 m, which allows post-Panamax vessels to dock. Adjacent to the port is the Mersin Free Zone, established in 1986.
