SPIA owns 225 ha of land on Buenaventura’s Aguadulce Peninsula and has rights to build and operate a container terminal there, under a concession granted by the Colombian National Institute of Concessions. The estimated total investment required for the construction of a 700,000 teu capacity terminal is approximately US$180m. Construction is scheduled to commence in November 2007, with completion within 18–24 months thereafter.
The Aguadulce Peninsula lies across the channel from the existing Port of Buenaventura, which is located in the Departmento Del Valle Del Cauca and is the biggest port in Colombia. The new container terminal will have its own access road and will ease congestion at the existing port, as Colombia’s trade continues to expand.
