According to Air-Rail’s Juan GarcÃa Prieto, Spanish operators are starting to realise the advantages of the Sidelifter’s versatility and the opportunity to change the way that containers are shifted. He says that the main use for Sidelifters is to unload standard trailers coming from ports and to deliver the containers to their final place of consignment. Empty containers are returned, and the cycle is repeated.
“The biggest growth area for Sidelifters in Spain is the individual operators moving containers,” says Prieto. “Sidelifters are also helping to reduce the thousands of trailers around Spain parked up with a container. At the end of the day money is not tied up in stationary trailers but in a Sidelifter, which is working all the time and earning money.”
The main geographic growth areas, he says, are around the biggest ports (Algeciras, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao) and in the Spanish islands, especially the Balearic group. “The growth potential is exponential. The more Sidelifters we have, the better known the technology is becoming and, as a result, we are selling more units. I think we can potentially double production each year,” he concluded.
