The assets of HCT will be transferred to the City Government, and HCT will be appointed as a management company to manage the assets and some of the operations of the terminal. After the restructuring, PSA, as HCT’s biggest shareholder, and other partners will continue to contribute to the growth and development of the container business in Hibiki.
Recently, HCT has seen slow but steady growth in its cargo handling volumes. The terminal, with its berths of 15 m depth alongside, attracts the biggest container vessels in the Port of Kitakyushu, and feeder services to and from local ports in Western Japan are steadily enhancing its function as transhipment base for the region.
In addition, 2,000 ha of industrial land just behind HCT has attracted a number of active investments, particularly in automobile-related industries. Big industrial names building plants include Bridgestone and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, and a wave of new investments for supporting plants, warehouses and distribution centres makes the City Government confident of future growth.
