Korean shipyards are increasing their investments in new and existing facilities, in order to cope with higher construction volumes and to improve throughput times. They also require bigger cranes to handle ever larger ship blocks. The largest of the cranes ordered has a lifting capacity of 1,500 tonnes. Deliveries are scheduled for spring 2008.
“Konecranes’ single-girder gantry cranes are attractive to shipyards due to their light weight combined with excellent stiffness,” commented Veikko Miettinen, sales manager for shipyard cranes.
All four shipyards already use Konecranes Goliath gantry cranes and, according to the company, are very satisfied with their performance. The rail span of a Goliath crane can be up to 216 m and its lifting height up to 98 m, while the crane itself can stand over 100 m high.
