The CMA CGM Group has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the municipality of Xiamen and New World Services Holding Ltd (NWS) of Hong Kong, to develop a deep water container terminal in the Haicang port area of the Port of Xiamen, Fujian Province which is scheduled to commence operations in 2009.

New terminal for Xiamen

The port of Xiamen ranks 22nd in Container Management’s World Top Container Ports ranking with more than 4m teu handled in 2006.

According Jacques Saade, founder and president of CMA CGM, “The new terminal will become a transhipment hub for the Group in South China.” The Group also wishes to invest in the ports of Tianjin and Shanghai/Yangshan.

This will be CMA CGM’s first port investment project in China, although it has previously invested in China, where it acquired an 8% share in “China Rail Intermodal” in 2006, a project costing more than US$1.6billion to conceive, build and manage a network of 18 railway container stations, covering the entire Chinese territory.

This agreement is noteworthy in being the first of this scale to be concluded between the French and Chinese maritime maritime sectors.
