To be built on reclaimed land with a handling and storage area of 400,000 sq m, the 2m teu capacity terminal is expected to expand JIP’s capacity by 45% and maintain Jeddah’s lead as a regional hub. Scheduled for completion towards the end of 2009, it will also form part of a land bridge after the completion of the Saudi Railways link from the Red Sea to the Gulf.
Tusdeer (80%) has entered into a joint venture with Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (20%), making the new facility the first privately constructed BOT container terminal project in Saudi Arabia. It will comprise a 740 m long main berth, a 300 m long feeder berth and a depth alongside of 18 metres, and it will be equipped with post-Panamax quay cranes. It will also have its own dedicated 16.5 m deep channel link to the Jeddah Islamic Port’s main channel.
