The technical evaluation committee of the Algeciras Bay Port Authority will now study in detail the proposal documents presented, after which the Port Authority Board of Administration is expected to grant Hanjin the 30-year concession to develop the terminal. To comprise a 675 m quay with 18.5 m depth alongside, the 1.5m teu capacity phase one of the terminal (eventually to extend to 1,900 m when fully completed), is due to be commissioned by the end of 2008.
Hanjin currently operates 12 global terminals, the last to be added being in Jacksonville on the east coast of the USA, which joined the other Hanjin US terminals operating on the west coast at Long Beach, Oakland and Seattle and the Algeciras project represents the first direct investment by an Asian shipping line in Spain and the Western Mediterranean.
