CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container shipping company, was awarded a 30-year concession to operate and develop Malta Freeport Terminals in October 2004. Since then, it has continued to develop its presence in Malta by expanding operations, increasing its investment and creating numerous jobs.
The new agreement marks the beginning of an ambitious expansion and modernisation programme of the Port’s infrastructure and equipment, in response to increasing international traffic. A sizeable investment programme includes dredging works, expansion of the yard and installation of the most modern equipment. It will enable the berthing of vessels exceeding 13,000 teu and will boost the terminal’s capacity to 3m teu in the years to come, while helping to create 500 jobs.
CMA CGM is the largest shipping operator in Malta with 14 weekly services. It will continue to operate Malta Freeport as a common user facility and will bolster its transhipment activities, taking advantage of the Port’s strategic location on shipping routes serving Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Aegean, Adriatic and Black Seas.
