A manufacturing zone will also feature in the plan, as well as business and R&D districts and leisure facilities. In line with the company’s global aims, environmental considerations were high on its design list, and it has created an eco-residential area.
Atkins Shanghai planning department manager, Li Xiaodong, said: “The key challenges were not only how to develop the port but how to integrate it with the other uses of the island, including significant areas requiring ecological protection.”
An Atkins team from Shanghai and Beijing beat competition from Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and China. Ningbo is located in eastern China, to the south of the Yangtze River Delta. Atkins has already designed a new waterfront district in the city, which has a population of around 8m people.
