Substantial rock blasting is involved in the construction of the project, to create both a deep harbour and the new terminal. After the expansion, the Port will have approximately 750,000 sq m of port area available and will be able to offer some 1,750 m of berths. The port, together with the international airport and railway station in Stavanger, will create an efficient transport hub for the region.
There is significant commercial activity in the area, with oil industry service companies headquartered nearby and natural gas brought ashore at the nearby Energy Park. The port will become a centre for scheduled international ferries to and from Hirtshals in Denmark and Newcastle in the UK.
