Kalmar and Steveco have a longstanding partnership, and for years have worked side-by-side in the Port of Kotka’s maintenance area, with Kalmar’s service workshop located next to Steveco’s.
Jouko Kyrola, President of Kalmar Finland, said: “By further heightening its stacking blocks with taller straddle carriers, Steveco has opted to expand its storage capacity in a way that is extremely cost-effective as well as flexible to the overall operation.”
The new units will feature electrically controlled engines to reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. They will also incorporate Kalmar’s seventh-generation technology consisting of an enhanced CAN-bus PLC diagnostics system, fly-by-wire controls and directly PLC-controlled engines and AC drives.
The new machines will replace some of the 20 Kalmar straddle carriers already in operation at Mussalo. Some of these existing 1-over-2 high straddle carriers will be transferred to Steveco’s terminal operations at the Port of Vuosaari in Helsinki after all the new units are received. Steveco has also commissioned Kalmar to refurbish three Kalmar CSC 340 straddle carriers for its Helsinki operations.
