“The launch of APM Terminals’ activities at Tanger-Med port has been a great success, with performance levels that already compare with those of longer-established, fully operational terminals,” commented Etienne Rocher, managing director of APM Terminals Tangier.
To date, over 600 new jobs – 97% local hires – have been created at the facility since its launch in March 2005. Total employment is projected to reach 700 by next year. As well as training new staff on site, Moroccan teams have been sent to other facilities in APMT’s global terminal network, including the ports of Aqaba in Jordan, Salalah in Oman, Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia and Port Said, Egypt.
Import container activities began at Tangier in February and will significantly increase in the months ahead. The transhipment of full containers, an operation central to Tanger-Med Port, has also seen rapid volume growth. It is anticipated that 1m teu will be handled at APM Terminals Tangier between April 2008 and March 2009, higher than original projections for the facility.
