The project (one of several Capacity initiatives on alternative power sources for terminal tractors, highlighted in the May issue of CM) involves developing a diesel/electric system that will increase fuel efficiency by 60–70% while reducing emissions by over 90%, according to the company.
“The development of this product will reduce emissions at all ports, intermodal yards and warehousing/distribution centres not only in North America but throughout the world,” stated Phillip Ford, Capacity’s president.
The PHETT will be developed in conjunction with Alternative Motive Power Systems, LLC (AMPS) of Alexandria, Ohio, whose proprietary control and power management systems makes it an industry leader in green motive power. The PHETT will be capable of operating in either a generator set ‘charge sustaining’ hybrid mode or in ‘zero-emissions’ mode using grid power.
