East D Street is a major route for rail and motor freight to the port and is used each day by hundreds of trucks and dozens of long trains, the latter being slowed by a tight curve around the southern end of the Foss Waterway. The new infrastructure allowed the realignment of the tracks to ease the curve – tripling rail capacity.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, speakers acknowledged the accomplishments of
FAST (Freight Action Strategy for the Everett-Seattle-Tacoma Corridor) – a partnership of 26 local cities, counties, ports, federal, state and regional transportation agencies, railroads and trucking interests intent on solving freight mobility problems – and its funding partners.
