The opening in February 2008 of Phase One of Bandar Abbas’s second container terminal – SRCT2 – increased the annual capacity of the port’s container terminal to 3.3m teu, and for 2008 a throughput of around 2m teu is forecast.
There are plans to double this capacity in the next 36 months. Phase Two of the new facility is scheduled to become operational in early 2012, adding 2,020 m of quay length dredged to a depth of 16 m alongside. This will be equipped with 18 post-Panamax gantry cranes.
Tehran-based Tidewater Middle East PLC, Iran’s leading container terminal operator, will continue to manage the facility, but has appointed Singapore-based Overseas Port Management Pte Ltd (OPM) as the executive manager of SRCT2 for a period of five years effective from December 2007. SRCT2 was formally handed over to OPM on September 14, 2008.
