Jorge D’Almeida, general manager of PSA Sines, presented the phase-two expansion plan for the terminal. This will involve an increase of 350 m in quay length, to a total 730 m by the end of the works, and expansion of the container storage area to more than 18 ha. The railway terminal will also be expanded.
Other construction works are also planned, including the Customs building. PSA Sines is currently discussing the works contract with Companhia Portuguesa de Trabalhos Portuários (CPTP), part of the MOTA ENGIL group.
In addition to civil engineering works, the terminal will purchase new equipment, including three new super post-Panamax quay cranes and new RTGs. The phase two expansion will result in a significant increase in capacity, from the current 400,000 teu per year to an estimated 800,000 teu by the end of 2009.
