An economics graduate from Newcastle University, Moffat joined the Port as finance and commercial director in November 2007 from 3 UK, a telecoms subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa, where he was chief finance officer. Previously he held a similar position at 3 Italia in Milan, and before that spent seven years in senior roles at telecoms company Orange.
Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, chairman of the Port of Tyne, commented: “Andrew is an astute strategist, and since joining us a year ago he has become an invaluable member of the team.”
The Port of Tyne, one of the UK’s largest trust ports, was recently named Port Operator of the Year 2008 at the Lloyds List London Awards, in addition to winning the Institute of Transport Management’s accolade of European Port of the Year 2008 for the second year in succession. In 2007 its total tonnage increased from 5.4m to 6m tonnes and its turnover grew by 9% to £37m. Projected 2008 turnover is around £50m.
