The sector employs 541 workers directly, 386 workers indirectly and another 311 ancillary workers, representing 0.22% of employment provincially and 0.044% in Andalusia. The supply sector at the Port of Algeciras Bay, located on the Strait of Gibraltar, concentrates 24 repair companies, 37 consignee agents, 11 naval suppliers and three marine pollution (Marpol) waste collecting businesses. Algeciras is currently Spain’s leading port in Marpol waste collection.
The ports in the Straits – Algeciras, Ceuta and Gibraltar – make up the second biggest European marketplace for bunkering activity (the supply of petroleum products and fuels), behind the ‘ARA’ ports (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp).
The Port of Algeciras supplied almost 2.4m tonnes of bunkers to 2,173 vessels – either at berth or anchor – in 2008.
