More than US$25m will go towards completion of the 15 metre deepening project, with the remaining US$6.9m for routine operations and maintenance of the Oakland harbour. The funding still needs Senate and Presidential approval and would be in addition to the US$6.8m included for the project as part of the recently-passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus package.
The federal funds and port funds will go directly to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency responsible for the project.
