This equates to around five million trucks trips being eliminated from the roads during the 18 years since the on-dock rail system was launched.
ExpressRail Elizabeth began service in August 1991 as a way to move cargo containers from the ship to the marketplace by rail rather than by truck. Currently, about 12% of containers handled at the port are transported by rail.
Two expansion projects set for completion this year include the addition of a second lead track to allow simultaneous arrival and departure of two trains, along with an additional support track to enable marshalling of trains to a single destination.
