The move from Port Klang’s Westport for ‘strategic reasons’, means that CMA CGM will have two hubs in the region, although it will also continue to transship regional cargo at Westport. Prior to the signing, CMA CGM vessels had started to call at PTP as part of its vessel sharing agreement with Maersk Line.
“The joint CMA CGM and Maersk service will contribute approximately half a million teus to PTP’s total annual throughput. Naturally, we expect to see an increase in the volumes from these services as the economy recovers and world trade picks up again”, said PTP chairman, Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.
“With our current handling capacity of 8m teus and plans to increase this to 12m teus within the next five years, we have sufficient terminal capacity and equipment to handle these vessels and those of other shipping lines”, he added.
