The ship’s arrival this week (16 June) from Trieste marked the commencement of the new Phoenician Express weekly container service, operated jointly CMA CGM and Maersk Line, linking the Northern Adriatic with the Far East.
With the first stage of the container quayside hinterland area only just completed, the extension of the first pier at Luka Koper has enabled the terminal to accept very large vessels. An additional 9,000 sq m of container storage area was achieved by in-filling lagoons. Four new post-Panamax cranes will shortly become operational.
Despite the recession, Luka Koper’s container terminal has fared well, with throughput during the first five months of this year reaching a total of 141,416 teus, almost matching the same period last year and six percent ahead of expectations.
