The lion’s share of this recovery has been put down to the15.5% growth in general cargo, which rose to just over 4m tonnes within the month, whilst container throughput recorded a 285,765 teus (+10%) increase.
At the same time ro-ro traffic on the Strait of Gibraltar crossings (Algeciras-Ceuta and Algeciras-Tangiers/Tanger Med) showed a similar trend for the first of the summer months, with a 7% increase at 17,163 units handled.
Overall the first half of 2009 for the Port closed with an accumulated total throughput of 33.8m tonnes, which, although representing an 11.9% decrease over the same period in 2008, confirmed that Algeciras Bay was the most active port in Spain.
