Port of Algeciras Bay on the rise again

The lion’s share of this recovery has been put down to the15.5% growth in general cargo, which rose to just over 4m tonnes within the month, whilst container throughput recorded a 285,765 teus (+10%) increase.

At the same time ro-ro traffic on the Strait of Gibraltar crossings (Algeciras-Ceuta and Algeciras-Tangiers/Tanger Med) showed a similar trend for the first of the summer months, with a 7% increase at 17,163 units handled.

Overall the first half of 2009 for the Port closed with an accumulated total throughput of 33.8m tonnes, which, although representing an 11.9% decrease over the same period in 2008, confirmed that Algeciras Bay was the most active port in Spain.

Container Throughput in the first six months totalled 1.47m teus (-10.9%); ro-ro 115,197 commercial vehicles (-5%), while bunkers continued to grow at a rate of 11% with 1.6m tonnes supplied.
