With the port expecting container volumes to grow prior to the start of construction of its planned Northern Gateway Container Terminal, the additional 10 acres of land has been made available directly behind the existing TCT2 container terminal facilities. This will enable the current annual container capacity to increase from 206,000 teu to 236,000 teu.
Initially the port will use the area to hold stocks of empty containers for major
existing customers, such as CMA CGM, Containerships and MSC. Around £600,000 (US$1m) of the investment has been used to purchase new equipment including, empty container handlers, terminal tractors and trailers.
