The additional facilities will increase container throughput by an additional 2m teu annually, whilst the western expansion will enable the company to achieve a total annual throughput of 6m teus.
HPA plans include the construction of a 1,059 metre wharf, to accommodate a combination of two of the latest generation container ships and one feeder ship. In addition, it will widen the turning circle towards the south from a current diameter of 480 m 600 m.
“Apart from the development in container volumes from 2015 onwards, the west expansion will also provide the EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg with quay walls offering higher crane load capacities to handle future generations of ships and the use advanced terminal technologies,” explained managing director, Peter Zielinski, adding, “That ensures that the Port of Hamburg will maintain its competitive edge over other ports.”
